	CRIMSON VELVET.

	This tune is found in one of the Dutch collections, Iriesche Lust-Sbf, by Jan Jansz Starter, the edition printed at Amsterdam in 1634. It is called " 'Twas a youthful Knight, which loved a galjant Lady," which is the first line of the ballad of " Constance of Cleveland: to the tune of Crimson Velvet." The ballad is in the Eoxburghe Collection, iii. 94, and in Collier's Boxburghe Ballads, p. 163. The tune of Crimson Velvet was, as Mr. Collier remarks, " highly popular in the reigns of Elizabeth and her successor." Among the ballads that were sung to it, are " The lamentable complaint of Queen Mary, for the unkind departure of King Philip, in whose absence she fell sick and died;" beginning— " Mary doth complain, Ladies, be you moved With my lamentations And my bitter groans," &c.
